Vice President, Treasurer, Medical Director

Dr. Petersen first observed the powerful impact of lifestyle interventions in his college years. Before then, plant-based nutrition was just a concept that sounded good but no scientific results or studies. As he continued his career in medicine, he repeatedly witnessed patient’s start a program with severe physical limitations and sad, hopeless dispositions transform into energetic, joyful individuals. Not only were there changes in lab values, vital signs, and body indexes; but also those sad downcast eyes were replaced by expressions of joy and hope. It was possible for these individuals to find pleasure in life again. He was inspired and this experience transformed the vision for his future.

Arriving in Midland in 2014, he was surprised to discover a strong plant-based nutrition movement in West Texas. After becoming acquainted with the amazing group of individuals in the community and those serving on the Healthy City board, he was inspired and wanted to join their efforts!

Dr. John Petersen is a diplomate in both Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine and is studying to take the exam for Board Certification in Lifestyle Medicine. He holds leadership roles in the Medical Staff of Midland Memorial Hospital, the Midland County Medical Society, and the Texas Chapter of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine. He is an elder at the Midland Seventh Day Adventist Church. Mostly he is grateful to be the partner of wife Nancy and treasures their three children.
